The email arrived 22 days after the application. Three lines. The only detail was the article of the resolution under which it was denied. Sergio — Venezuelan, freelance designer, five years legally in Colombia on a work visa — had applied for his first resident visa with all the documentation his immigration advisor indicated. The cause of the denial, reconstructed afterward with a specialist lawyer: a health insurance policy whose territorial coverage clause explicitly excluded Colombia in an appendix neither of them had read carefully.
The Cancillería's statistics show an overall visa approval rate of 92.4% for applications submitted with complete documentation. What that number does not show is how many applications are withdrawn or corrected before formal evaluation, and how many people submit applications with incomplete or deficient documentation that generate inadmission or costly appeals.

The Six Most Frequent Visa Denial Causes
1. Insufficient medical coverage or territorial exclusion of Colombia
The most common cause. Article 11 of Resolution 5477/2022 requires valid medical coverage for Colombia. Most frequently rejected: EPS plans without an active Colombian employment contract, travel insurance that excludes stays over 180 days, policies with territorial clauses that list Colombia as an exclusion, and telemedicine-only plans without physical hospitalization.
2. Name discrepancies between the policy and the passport
A single character difference between the name on the health insurance and the passport name generates an observation that halts the process for 15 to 30 business days. It is the most avoidable of all causes and one of the most frequent.
3. Criminal records under Law 679 of 2001
Any foreigner with a preliminary investigation or conviction in Colombia or abroad for offenses related to the sexual exploitation of minors is subject to visa denial under Law 679. The law does not require a final conviction — a preliminary investigation is sufficient.
4. Insufficient income for the requested category
Each visa category has minimum income requirements. The digital nomad visa requires 3 SMLMV monthly from a foreign source. The investor visa requires a minimum certified investment amount. Submitting bank statements that do not consistently demonstrate the required amount generates denial.
5. Inconsistencies between the application and supporting documents
Contradictory dates between the application form and supporting documents, discrepancies in reported address vs. the address in documents, or declared visa purpose that does not match documented activity are recurring inadmission causes.
6. Prior irregular stay in Colombia
The applicant's immigration history is reviewed in the Migración Colombia system. A foreigner who on previous visits stayed beyond authorized time, did not pay irregular stay fines, or was subject to any immigration measure has their file flagged, and that history conditions future applications.
What to Do if Your Visa Is Denied
A Colombian visa denial is neither final nor non-appealable. The applicant has the right to request reconsideration via a recurso de reposición (reconsideration appeal) filed with the same authority within 10 business days of notification. If the response remains negative, they can file a recurso de apelación (appeal) before the hierarchical superior.
The most effective appeal is a well-founded reposición with correctly prepared documentation — especially when the denial cause was a rectifiable documentary deficiency. The assistance of an immigration lawyer significantly increases the success rate in reposición appeals.
