Colombia Spouse Visa 2026: Complete Guide for Spouses of Colombian Nationals

Civil marriage requirement, cohabitation proof, work authorization and the 5-year path to permanent residency

Key rule: Only civil marriage qualifies — religious ceremonies alone do not. Domestic partners who are not civilly married must apply under the Compañero/a Permanente category.

The Fastest Path to Legal Residence When Married to a Colombian

The Spouse Visa (Migrante Cónyuge de Nacional Colombiano) is one of the most straightforward paths to long-term legal residence in Colombia. It requires no minimum income threshold or investment — only proof of a genuine civil marriage and a real cohabitation relationship. This guide covers every document, common pitfalls and the full step-by-step application process for 2026.

Civil Marriage vs. Religious Marriage

Colombia only accepts civil marriage for this visa. A Catholic, evangelical or any other religious ceremony does not produce the legal marriage record that Cancillería requires. Civil marriage is registered with a Colombian notary (Notaría) and produces a registro civil de matrimonio. If you married abroad, you need an apostilled copy with a certified Spanish translation.

If you only had a religious ceremony, consider registering a civil marriage before a Colombian notary, or apply under the Domestic Partner category (Compañero/a Permanente) instead.

Proving Cohabitation

Cancillería looks for evidence that this is a real, ongoing relationship — not a marriage of convenience. The strongest proof includes shared utility bills (electricity, water, internet) at the same address, rental contracts listing both spouses, bank statements at a shared address, and sworn testimonial letters from neighbors, employers or family. Provide at least 3–6 months of evidence where possible.
