What Is Homologación and When Do You Actually Need It?
Homologación (or convalidación) is Colombia's process of officially recognizing a foreign university degree as equivalent to a Colombian degree. It is managed by the Ministry of National Education (Ministerio de Educación Nacional — MEN) through the CONACES system. Without recognition, a foreign degree is not accepted by Colombian professional registration bodies, public sector employers or many formal private sector positions.

The CONACES Process: Step by Step
- Create a CONACES account at conaces.educacion.gov.co. All applications are submitted online.
- Upload your documents — see required documents list below. Scanned color copies of originals are submitted digitally; originals may be requested during the process.
- Pay the application fee — varies by degree level (undergraduate, graduate). Verify current fee on the CONACES portal.
- CONACES evaluation — academic committee reviews your degree against Colombian equivalents. For some degrees, they may request additional documentation or an interview.
- Resolution issued — if approved, a Ministerial Resolution is issued recognizing your degree. This document is your official recognition — keep multiple certified copies.

- Degree certificate (diploma) — original + apostilled (or consularly legalized)
- Academic transcript (acta de grado or equivalent) — apostilled
- Transcript or list of subjects/credits studied (plan de estudios)
- Official certified Spanish translation of all documents (if not already in Spanish)

How Long Does It Take?
CONACES processing times are notoriously variable — officially 6–12 months, but delays of 18 months or more are common for complex cases or high-demand periods. The most common delay causes: incomplete apostille, missing translated transcripts, institution accreditation issues, and high application volumes in medical and engineering fields. Submit a complete, well-organized application to avoid back-and-forth delays.
Medical Degrees: Additional RETHUS Step
After CONACES recognition, medical graduates (doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, etc.) must register with RETHUS (Registro Único Nacional del Talento Humano en Salud) before practicing. This registration requires the CONACES resolution plus professional liability documentation. The RETHUS registration alone can take 2–4 additional months.
Recognized vs. Not Recognized: The Practical Difference
Without homologación, you can still work in many roles in Colombia — but you cannot use the protected title (médico, abogado, ingeniero) in a formal Colombian legal context, cannot register with a Colombian professional body, and cannot access public sector positions that require the degree. For regulated professions, there is no workaround — recognition is mandatory before practice.
