South American Migration Agreements with Colombia
While Colombia is often discussed alongside Mercosur countries in regional migration conversations, it is important to understand the actual legal framework: Colombia has not ratified the Mercosur Residency Agreement that grants simple residency rights between full Mercosur members (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay). What Colombia does have are bilateral agreements with specific countries and participation in PROSUR.
What "Associate Mercosur Status" Means for Colombia
Colombia has associate status with Mercosur — meaning Colombian businesses benefit from trade preferences, but Colombian and Mercosur nationals do not automatically get the simplified residency rights that full Mercosur members provide to each other. A Brazilian, Argentine or Uruguayan national moving to Colombia must apply through the standard Colombian visa system at Cancillería.

For Argentine, Brazilian and Other Mercosur Nationals
Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguayan and Paraguayan nationals do not have a special residency agreement with Colombia — they apply through the standard Cancillería process for whichever visa category fits their situation (Pensioner, Worker, Spouse, Investor, Digital Nomad, etc.). The standard visa process is accessible, well-documented and the same as for all other nationalities.
One practical advantage for South Americans: many South American academic credentials are recognized more smoothly in Colombia due to regional educational equivalency agreements, which can simplify professional licensing processes.
Practical Tip: Resolution 5477 Applies to Everyone
Regardless of nationality or bilateral agreements, all Colombian long-stay visa applicants must comply with Resolution 5477's medical assistance plan requirement. There are no nationality-based exemptions from this rule.
