Step 1: Choose Your Visa Before You Arrive
Colombia does not easily allow status changes from tourist (PIP) to long-stay visa while in-country. Decide your visa category before arriving, or return to your home country to apply. The most common paths:
- Digital Nomad — remote workers, all clients outside Colombia. Quick to obtain; does not count toward residency.
- Pensioner (Migrante Pensionado) — retirees with 3× SMMLV monthly pension income.
- Capital Income (Rentista de Capital) — passive income (investments, rental income from abroad).
- Service Provider / Independent Professional — freelancers with Colombian clients.
- Investor — qualifying direct investment in Colombia.
All long-stay categories require a Resolution 5477 medical assistance plan.

Finding Housing
Most reliable sources: Facebook groups ("Expats Medellin" — very active), Airbnb for month one while you search in person, Metrocuadrado.com and FincaRaíz.com. Standard requirements: passport or Cédula, income proof, 2–3 month deposit (in lieu of Colombian guarantor).
First 30 Days Checklist
- Apply for Cédula de Extranjería within 15 days of visa approval
- Get Colombian SIM card (Claro has best coverage)
- Open Nequi account (works with passport while Cédula processes)
- Register with your country's embassy/consulate
- Set up fiber internet at apartment (Claro or ETB)
- Open traditional bank account once Cédula arrives
