Two Visas, Two Very Different Legal Situations
Colombia has emerged as one of the world's top destinations for remote workers and freelancers — excellent internet infrastructure, a growing expat community, and a favorable cost of living. But "I work online" does not mean one size fits all in Colombian immigration law. The visa you need depends critically on where your clients are located and how you structure your work.
The Decision Framework: One Question First
Are all your clients/employers located outside Colombia?
- YES → Digital Nomad Visa (Visitante Nómada Digital) is your option
- NO / MIXED → Service Provider Visa (Migrante Prestador de Servicios) or Worker Visa
- NOT SURE → Read the detailed breakdown below
Digital Nomad Visa: The Full Picture
The Visitante Nómada Digital was created specifically for the global remote work community. It allows foreign nationals to live legally in Colombia while working remotely for clients and employers based entirely outside Colombia.
| Element | Digital Nomad Visa |
|---|---|
| Visa tier | Visitante (V) — temporary |
| Duration | Up to 2 years |
| Income requirement | USD 1,400/month minimum — per individual month, no averaging |
| Work authorization | Remote work for foreign clients only |
| Colombian clients allowed | No |
| Counts toward permanent residency | No — Visitante category |
| EPS enrollment | No — not employed in Colombia |
| Cédula de Extranjería | Yes — issued upon registration |
Service Provider Visa: When You Work for Colombian Clients
The Migrante Prestador de Servicios is the correct choice when you provide services to Colombian clients under a service contract. This is also the right visa if you are a freelancer who works for both Colombian and foreign clients — having even one Colombian client means you cannot use the Digital Nomad visa.
| Element | Service Provider Visa |
|---|---|
| Visa tier | Migrante (M) — long-term |
| Duration | Up to 3 years |
| Income requirement | Service contract value (no fixed minimum) |
| Work authorization | Services per your contract scope |
| Colombian clients allowed | Yes — required |
| Counts toward permanent residency | Yes — 5-year Migrante path |
| EPS enrollment | Possible as voluntary contributor |
The Residency Trap: Why Your Choice Now Matters for 5 Years
Many online workers default to the Digital Nomad visa because it seems easier — no Colombian clients needed. But if your long-term plan is to live permanently in Colombia, every year on a Digital Nomad visa is a wasted year for residency purposes. The 5-year clock to permanent residency only starts with a Migrante category visa.
Tax Implications: Both Visas
Both Digital Nomad and Service Provider visa holders who spend 183+ days in Colombia become Colombian tax residents. Colombia taxes worldwide income at 0–39% progressive rates. There is no tax treaty between Colombia and the US. This applies regardless of which visa you hold — the tax obligation comes from presence, not visa category.
