Your Colombian Child Is Your Legal Basis for Residence
Having a child who is a Colombian national gives any foreign parent a clear legal pathway to long-term residence in Colombia. The Migrante Padre/Madre de Nacional Colombiano visa reflects Colombia's recognition that children have a fundamental right to both parents in their lives. It applies regardless of whether you are married, divorced, separated or unmarried — and regardless of custody arrangements.
Your Child's Registro Civil Is the Core Document
The central document is your child's Colombian registro civil de nacimiento (birth registration) listing you as the mother or father. If your name appears in Colombia's civil registry as the child's parent, you have the primary proof required. A recent copy of the registro civil (issued within 90 days) from the Registraduría Nacional is what you need.
| Situation | Key Document | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Child born in Colombia, your name on registro civil | Registro civil de nacimiento | Strongest case — apply directly. |
| Child born abroad, registered as Colombian national | Foreign birth cert + Colombian civil registration | Apostille + Spanish translation required. |
| Paternity/maternity not officially registered | DNA test or court recognition | Legal process needed before visa application. |
| Adoptive parent of Colombian child | Adoption decree recognized in Colombia | Must be legally finalized. |
