Colombia Independent Professional Visa 2026: For Self-Employed Licensed Professionals

Degree apostille, Colombian professional license (tarjeta profesional) and autonomous practice requirements

Critical requirement: To work as a licensed professional (médico, abogado, ingeniero, arquitecto, etc.) independently in Colombia, you generally need a Colombian professional license (tarjeta profesional) issued by the relevant regulatory body. Simply having a foreign degree is not sufficient to practice independently in regulated professions.

Practicing a Regulated Profession Independently in Colombia

Colombia regulates many professions — medicine, law, engineering, architecture, accounting and others — through national regulatory councils that issue professional licenses (tarjetas profesionales). Foreign nationals who want to practice these professions independently in Colombia must typically obtain Colombian professional licensing in addition to their immigration visa.

Which Professions Require Colombian Licensing

Regulated professions that typically require a Colombian tarjeta profesional include: medicine and healthcare specialties, law, engineering disciplines, architecture, psychology, accounting (contador público) and others governed by specific professional councils. For non-regulated professions (consultants, designers, business advisors), the licensing requirement may not apply — consult a specialist.

Getting a Colombian Professional License as a Foreigner

The degree recognition (homologación) process for foreign professionals varies by profession. Generally:

  1. Have your foreign degree apostilled and translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
  2. Submit the degree for recognition to the relevant professional council (e.g., Tribunal Ético de Medicina for doctors, Consejo Superior de la Judicatura for lawyers).
  3. Some councils require an equivalency exam or supervised practice period.
  4. Once the degree is recognized, apply for the tarjeta profesional.

This process can take several months. Plan accordingly before applying for the visa.
