How to Renew Your Colombian Visa in 2026: Timing, Documents and Common Mistakes

When to apply, what's different from the first application and how to protect your 5-year residency clock

Apply before your current visa expires — not after. Colombia does not have an automatic grace period after visa expiry. If your visa expires before the renewal is processed, you enter illegal status. Apply at least 30 days before expiry.

Renewal Is Not Just a Repeat of the First Application

Many visa holders assume renewing a Colombian visa is simply resubmitting the same documents from their first application. In practice, there are meaningful differences — and some documents that felt permanent the first time have time-limited validity rules that require fresh copies. This guide covers everything you need to know to renew your Colombian visa confidently in 2026.

When to Apply for Renewal

The optimal window is 30 to 60 days before your current visa expires. Applying too early (more than 3 months before expiry) may result in Cancillería requesting that you wait. Applying too late risks running out of time if additional documents are requested. The 30-day window is the practical safety margin for standard cases.

If your visa expires during processing: Once you have submitted your renewal application and have proof of submission, you are considered to be in a legal transition period — but this is not automatic protection. Keep your submission receipt. Do not travel internationally during this period without consulting an immigration attorney.

The 90-Day Document Freshness Rule

All supporting documents must be issued within 90 days of your application date. This applies to criminal background checks, bank statements, income certificates, pension statements, employer letters, and Cámara de Comercio certificates. Do not rely on documents from your original application — they will be expired.

Category-Specific Renewal Considerations

Migrante Trabajador (Worker)

You need an updated letter from your employer confirming that your employment contract is still active. If you changed employers during the visa period, you need documentation of the change (annotation or updated visa) and a letter from your current employer.

Migrante Pensionado (Pensioner)

Fresh pension income certificate and bank statements showing deposits are required. Pension amounts are checked against the current SMMLV minimum — confirm you still meet the 3x threshold.

Migrante Cónyuge / Compañero Permanente

Proof of ongoing cohabitation and relationship must be updated. Recent utility bills and a renewed sworn declaration if applicable. If the relationship has changed, consult an attorney before applying.

Migrante Inversionista / Socio Propietario

Updated Cámara de Comercio certificate, current financial statements, and evidence that the investment is still active and meets the threshold.

Renewal requires fresh documents — the 90-day freshness rule applies to all supporting materials, not just criminal background checks.

Protecting Your 5-Year Residency Clock

For those accumulating time toward permanent residency, visa gaps are dangerous. A period of overstay — even brief — can interrupt the continuity of your legal residence and restart the 5-year clock. Renew early, maintain continuous status, and keep records of every visa issued and every renewal submitted.

Updating Your Medical Assistance Plan for Renewal

Your medical assistance plan must remain valid throughout your new visa period. If your current CoVisas plan expires with your visa, you need a new plan certificate covering the renewal period before submitting. Contact CoVisas early — we can issue multi-year plans aligned with your renewal timeline.
