The Colombian Visa Application Timeline Step by Step
Document Preparation (1–4 weeks)
Gathering apostilled documents, certified translations, criminal certificates, medical plan, income proof and employment documentation. This is the phase most applicants underestimate — criminal checks and apostilles take time. Budget 2–4 weeks minimum, especially for US applicants who need both state and FBI checks.
Online Application Submission (1 day)
Complete the form at cancilleria.gov.co, upload all documents, and pay the non-refundable study fee (~USD 54). Keep your application reference number — you will need it to track status and respond to any requests.
Initial Review — 5 Business Days Standard
Cancillería officers review your application for completeness and document compliance. If no additional information is needed, a decision (approval or denial) is typically issued within 5 business days.
Additional Document Request (if triggered)
If officers identify a gap or inconsistency, they issue a formal document request. You have a limited number of days to respond. This pauses and effectively resets the review period. Total processing can now extend to 30 calendar days or more.
Visa Issued — Physical Entry
Approved visas appear in your Cancillería application portal. You typically have up to 6 months from issuance to make your first entry. Once you enter, the Cédula de Extranjería 15-day registration clock begins.
What Triggers an Additional Document Request
Additional document requests are the single biggest cause of processing delays. Common triggers include:
