Colombia is Actively Welcoming American Expats — With Specific Requirements
The United States consistently ranks among the top countries of origin for long-term foreign residents in Colombia. From Medellín and Bogotá to Cartagena and Santa Marta, American expats are a visible and growing community — retirees drawn by the Pensioner visa, digital nomads on the Nómada Digital visa, investors attracted by real estate and business opportunities, and partners of Colombian nationals.
Colombia has designed its visa system to accommodate this influx. But US citizens face specific additional requirements — notably the FBI background check — that can trip up applicants who follow generic visa guides without reading the fine print for American applicants.
Visa-Free Entry: What "90 Days" Actually Means for Americans
US citizens do not need a visa to enter Colombia for tourism. On arrival, Migración Colombia issues a Permiso de Ingreso y Permanencia (PIP) for up to 90 days. This can be extended once at a Migración Colombia office for an additional 90 days — for a maximum of 180 days per calendar year.
Important: Colombia counts days per calendar year — January 1 to December 31. The common "leave and return to reset the clock" strategy does not work in Colombia. Every day you spend in the country counts toward the 180-day annual limit, regardless of how many times you cross the border.
The Best Visa Options for American Expats
Digital Nomad Visa — For Remote Workers
The most popular option for Americans working remotely. Requires minimum income of approximately USD 1,400/month (3x SMLMV), a valid remote work contract or client invoices, a US state criminal check + FBI federal check (both apostilled), and a Resolution 5477-compliant medical assistance plan. Valid for up to 2 years.
Pensioner Visa — For Retirees
For Americans receiving a pension — Social Security, private pension, 401k distributions, IRA withdrawals — of at least 3x SMLMV per month (~USD 1,400). Pension certificates must be apostilled and translated. Note: this visa does not permit employment and does not allow EPS enrollment — only private medical assistance plan coverage.
Investor Visa — For Business and Real Estate Investors
Requires a minimum investment in Colombian property, a business registered in Colombia, or a portfolio in a Colombian financial institution above the specified threshold. A popular route for Americans who purchase real estate in Medellín, Cartagena or Bogotá.
Spouse / Permanent Partner Visa
For Americans married to or in a registered permanent partnership with a Colombian citizen. Requires marriage certificate or civil union documentation, proof of cohabitation, and the standard visa package. Also requires apostille and certified translation of foreign documents.
The FBI Background Check: What Americans Must Know
This is the requirement that most generic Colombia visa guides miss for US applicants. Cancillería requires US citizens applying for long-stay visas to provide:
- State criminal background check — from your state of residence, apostilled by that state's Secretary of State
- FBI Identity History Summary Check — federal-level background check, apostilled by the US State Department (federal apostille — not a state apostille)
Both must be issued within 90 days of the visa application date. The FBI check typically takes 3–5 business days if submitted online via the FBI's website. Federal apostille from the US State Department typically takes an additional 5–8 business days. Plan accordingly — the combined process takes 2–3 weeks minimum.
The Tax Trap Most Americans Don't See Coming
Colombia and the United States have no double taxation agreement as of 2026. This means a US citizen who becomes a Colombian tax resident — by spending more than 183 days in Colombia in any 365-day window — may owe income taxes in both countries simultaneously on the same income.
US citizens already file worldwide income on their US tax return regardless of where they live. Add Colombian tax residency on top of that, and the combined tax burden can be significant. The US Foreign Tax Credit provides some relief, but it doesn't eliminate the issue for all income types. Before committing to a long-term Colombian residence, consult an expat tax specialist familiar with both US and Colombian tax law.
Health Insurance: The Requirement Americans Frequently Get Wrong
Every long-stay Colombian visa requires a medical assistance plan compliant with Resolution 5477. Many Americans submit US health insurance policies or travel insurance — which Cancillería will not accept. The plan must be issued by a company with Colombian legal operations, must be valid for the entire visa duration, and must explicitly cover all 7 required areas: accidents, illness, disability, hospitalization, maternity, repatriation and death.
