Studying in Colombia: Which Visa Do You Need?
Colombia has become an increasingly attractive destination for international students — particularly at the post-graduate level, where programs at Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Nacional, Universidad del Rosario and other institutions attract global talent. Understanding which visa category applies to your situation is the first step.
Migrante Estudiante vs. Visitante Study Options
| Study Type | Visa Category | Counts Toward Residency |
|---|---|---|
| University undergraduate or post-graduate program | Migrante Estudiante | Yes (5-year path) |
| Technical or vocational program at registered institution | Migrante Estudiante | Yes |
| Language school or short intensive course | Visitante (study subcategory) | No |
| Online degree program (no physical presence required) | No visa required for online study | N/A |
Required Documents for Migrante Estudiante
| Document | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Enrollment certificate | Official letter from the Colombian institution confirming current enrollment, program name and expected duration. Must be from a recognized institution. |
| Institution recognition | Evidence that the institution is registered with Colombia's Ministry of Education (MEN). |
| Proof of financial support | Bank statements or scholarship documentation showing you can support yourself during studies. |
| Criminal background check | Country of origin + 3-year countries. Apostilled. Within 90 days. |
| Medical assistance plan | Resolution 5477-compliant, all 7 coverages, full visa duration. (Students may also be eligible for the university's health coverage once enrolled.) |
| Valid passport | Min 6 months validity. |
After Graduation: Transitioning to a Work Visa
Completing a degree in Colombia does not automatically give you work authorization. After graduation, if you want to work in Colombia, you need to apply for a Worker Visa, Service Provider Visa or another appropriate work-authorized Migrante subcategory — with a qualifying employer or client. Plan this transition before your Student Visa expires.
