Colombia Migrante vs. Visitante Visa: Key Differences, Rights and Which One You Actually Need

The three-tier Colombian visa system explained — and why choosing the wrong category costs you time, money and immigration status

Critical distinction: Only Migrante (M) and Residente (R) visas count toward the 5-year residency path and allow the Cedula de Extranjeria. Visitante (V) visas — including the Digital Nomad Visa — do not count toward permanent residency. If your long-term goal is residency in Colombia, visa category selection matters enormously.

Colombia's Three-Tier Visa System: An Overview

Resolution 5477 of 2022 reorganized Colombia's entire visa framework into three clear tiers:

TierCategoryPurposeLeads to Residency?
VVisitanteTemporary, specific-purpose staysNo
MMigranteLong-term residents with ties to ColombiaYes (5 years)
RResidentePermanent residentsAlready there

The distinction between V and M is the most consequential one for most expats — and the most frequently misunderstood.

The Visitante (V) Tier: Temporary by Design

Visitante visas are for foreigners in Colombia for specific, bounded purposes. The subcategories include:

Key characteristics of all V visas:

For Digital Nomads planning long-term: If you arrive in Colombia on a Digital Nomad visa intending to eventually apply for permanent residency, your years on the V visa do not count. You would need to transition to a Migrante category to begin the 5-year residency clock. Plan this early if long-term residency is your goal.

The Migrante (M) Tier: Building Real Ties

Migrante visas are for foreigners establishing genuine, longer-term connections to Colombia. The subcategories include:

Key characteristics of all M visas:

Choosing between V and M isn't just about duration — it determines whether your time in Colombia builds toward permanent residency.

The Residente (R) Tier: Permanent Residence

The Residente visa is Colombia's permanent residence status. It can be obtained after 5 continuous years under most Migrante subcategories, or in specific cases (e.g., spouse of Colombian national with 3 years of marriage, parent of Colombian child, etc.) on different timelines. Residente holders have:

Practical Strategy: Which Category Do You Need?

Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Do I want to work in Colombia or for Colombian clients? If yes, you need an M Trabajador or M Socio. The Digital Nomad V visa only covers foreign-source remote work.
  2. Is long-term residency or eventual citizenship my goal? If yes, start on a Migrante subcategory — not a Visitante. Every year on a V visa is a year that doesn't count toward permanent residency.
  3. Is this a short stay with a specific purpose? If yes, a Visitante subcategory is appropriate and simpler to obtain.
